WHAT DO I TELL MY CHILD

What you tell your child about the evaluation depends on how much he or she can understand. Give a brief explanation to a problem that your child is familiar with such as, “difficulty with school”. Let your child know that you are trying to understand the difficulty and how to make things better. The office provides a very comfortable pediatric setting.

WHEN I CALL FOR AN APPOINTMENT WHAT

SHOULD I EXPECT

We look forward to your call and we will be happy to address your questions. An initial consultation interview with parents and child can be scheduled. You are asked to bring any prior evaluation results, if available, with you to the interview. During the office consultation we will discuss the symptoms which prompted your call for an appointment, a medical history, educational history, psychological/social history, and child development history. The neuropsychologist will observe and ask questions regarding your child’s attention, perception, memory, self-direction, speech/language, sensory/motor, and mood/social skills. If a more in-depth evaluation is needed, a testing schedule is discussed. Parents at times are asked to fill out questionnaires regarding the child’s development and behaviors. The time required for testing depends upon your child’s age and symptoms. Evaluations are usually divided into several sessions so as to allow for your child’s comfort. If your child has already received an evaluation, and you are seeking treatment, services are scheduled based upon the evaluation results and the neuropsychological interview.

WHAT IS NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING?

Our health, development, learning, and the ability to relate with each other are governed by the health of our brain/body functions and the health of our environment. Neuropsychological testing is a means of evaluating the major functions of development: attention, executive function, perception, memory, speech, and language, mood, and sensory/motor abilities, correlated with age, intellect, educational level, and socio-cultural factors. Brain behavior research has produced test data which systematically corresponds to specific aspects of these brain functions. This type of detailed evaluation allows us to specify strengths, weaknesses, dysfunction and impairment in development. Specific evaluations are available for all age groups: infants, early childhood, young children, older children, adults and geriatric populations. Our office specializes in Pediatric Neuropsychology: Ages birth-21 years. Neuropsychological evaluation and close collaboration with medical specialists often provide clinical correlation with imaging data such as electroencephalograms (EEG), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), as well as food/airborne sensitivity profiles and other medical profiles. Neuropsychological evaluation also involves close collaboration with school/educational specialists and health specialists in the fields of Behavioral Psychology, Audiology, Speech/Language, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Social Work, Optometry ….

WHAT IS THE TRAINING OF A

NEUROPSYCHOLOGIST?

Neuropsychological training involves interdisciplinary training in psychology, neurology, neuropsychiatry, and allied health disciplines, with specialized study in brain anatomy and physiology, human learning, human development, research measurement and design. Neuropsychological training involves team rounds with neurology, neuropsychiatry, physical rehabilitation medicine, pediatrics…… Competence requires several years of additional training and experience beyond the doctoral degree required for conventional practice.
